With the abundance of skincare options out in the market, we're all interested, perhaps more fascinated by the intricacies of the Korean beauty culture. Let's just say, Koreans are not lazy with their daily skincare routine! In addition to at-home regimens, many Korean women frequent spas to get facials and dermatology clinics to keep their skin in tip top shape.
Although that dewy, glowing skin and perfectly glistening soft hair may be somewhat due to those lucky genetics, it also comes from starting a beauty routine at an early age. We interviewed one of our close Korean friends, k-beauty obsessed and fellow beauty enthusiast on how she upkeeps her skin!
What is your daily skincare routine?
I change up my daily routine as I find some products stop working after I use them for a few months. In the morning, I use a cleanser, toner, acne solution, serum, eye cream, moisturiser and sunscreen. In the nighttime, I use a cleanser, toner, acne solution, serum, eye cream, moisturiser and a blemish treatment for red spots. A few times a week, I will add a moisturising night mask. With the air conditioner on full blast in the office, I need hydration and moisture as my skin gets really dry so I love a night time mask to recharge my skin!
What is your skin type?
Combination, Acne-Prone, Sensitive
What is one product you cannot live without or swear by?
Paula's Choice Clear Regular Strength Daily Skin Clearing Treatment with 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide. This product, after years of trial and error, is the only thing that keeps my acne under control!
What is your top 3 favourite Korean brands and top korean products?
My top three favourite Korean brands are Dr. Jart+, Erborian and Amore Pacific. My top Korean products are the Dr. Jart+ Vital Hydra Solution Deep Hydration Sheet Masks and the Erborian CC Creme High Def Skin Protector with SPF. I swear by these sheet masks and use them every other night. They adhere to my face perfectly and are ultra hydrating! I buy them on Amazon in packs of five! I was actually introduced to the Erborian CC Creme by Megha (Co-founder of Nomad Beauty)! With our skin tone ever changing with the weather, this CC creme changes colour to match your skin perfectly! I especially love this product in the summer when I am tanned, because it matches my darker skin tone!
Outside of skincare, what other Korean ideas, personal beauty secrets, lifestyle elements can help achieve that "glow/glass skin"?
I am a strong believer in drinking lots of water, getting enough sleep and wearing sunscreen. It has been drilled into my head to wear sunscreen no matter what the weather is since UV rays are always present! I also believe in spending time each morning and evening on my skin care routine. After applying each product, I wait a few minutes so the ingredients sink into my skin. I was taught this by my mother!
What's the most unique or "craziest" ingredient have you tried (i.e. snail mucus)?
I do not usually go specifically looking for certain ingredients, but I do like using charcoal tablets. I mix them with water and natural oils to make my own masks!
What do you think Koreans do differently in their skincare regimen that helps them have beautiful skin?
We are religious about getting facials! I get one every month to clean out my skin and have a fresh palette to work with!
What is the hottest Korean beauty trend now?
My mom is actually in Korea right now and she is bringing back a LED light mask for us to try. She said its all the craze everywhere so we hope its worth the splurge!
At what age did you start using products?
What is on your skincare wish list?
I do not have any specific products I want to try, but something I do wish I do more is try more treatments such as Microdermabrasion and laser.
Do you use a lot of makeup? What products do you use?
I do like to use several products and am always up for trying new things! Marc Jacobs Eye primer- keeps everything in place. Stila liquid eyeliner. You can wash your face and it will stay. Very waterproof! Estée Lauder eyelash primer, Blink mascara - very gentle and doesn't pull out your lashes. Estee Lauder face prime, Nars blush and Nars Chelsea girl lip gloss.
How often do you use masks? Facials?
I use sheet masks at least every other night. If I am not too tired, I use them every night! Once the mask is starting to dry, I take the extra serum from the packet and layer it on! I get facials once a month- that's non-negotiable for me!
